Geek Gear: Superman Meets The Doctor In ‘Super Who’

The $10 t-shirt deal of the day over at RIPT Apparel is a mash-up of Doctor Who and Superman called "Super Who" by artist Bamboota.

The sale at RIPT began today, Friday, May 27, 2011, at midnight CST, and will continue for 24 hours from then, and once it's over, it will not be sold on the site anymore.

Of the design, the artist said, "I thought it would be funny to make it seem as if Superman was in a haste to defeat evil and didn't realize that he stepped into the TARDIS instead of a phone booth by accident!!" [...]

Happy Director Dropout Day! Albert Hughes Steps Away From ‘Akira’ Remake

Well then—today appears to be a day where directors who have been long attached to high–profile movies decide they're done with all of the complications and it's time to move on to new ventures.

Earlier today it was reported that The Fighter director David O. Russell had decided to step away from the adaptation of the hit video game, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, which is good news to most fans' ears. Now another movie project that faithful followers have been very much against—the live–action remake of the classic Japanese animated feature, Akira—has also lost its director.

Albert Hughes, who along with his brother Allen have delivered titles like Menace II Society, From Hell, and The Book of Eli, has decided to depart from his attachment to Akira. According to sources, there was some creative differences between Hughes and Warner Brothers on the movie, which led to his self-removal. He and his brother do still have a strong relationship, however, and it's assumed he'll be lining up a new movie right away. [...]

Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel & Bill Nighy Join ‘Total Recall’ Cast

Are you interested in the Total Recall remake yet? It sounded like the worst idea in the world at first, but the cast keeps growing and growing and now it's hard to ignore and not be at least a little intrigued by.

Three new names have now joined the cast, including Kate Beckinsale (whose husband, Len Wiseman, is directing) and Jessica Biel, who were said to be in talks for roles around the same time Ethan Hawke was cast in a small cameo role. At the time, I personally assumed that Beckinsale would best fit the role of Melina (played by Rachel Ticotin in the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger version), and that Biel would be better suited to the role of Lori (originally played by Sharon Stone). As it turns out, however, this assumption was wrong and the actresses will be playing the opposite roles.

Also joining the cast is the great Bill Nighy, who will play the role of Quatto, leader of the resistance. In the '90 film the character was named "Kuato" and appeared as an...addition...to the character George, who was played by Marshall Bell. [...]

One of the joys of writing about movie news is that you can cover something and the storylines that come it a significant amount of times, and then find out that none of it really mattered, as if it were all just a dream. But in this case, discovering that it was all a dream (or nightmare, in some cases) is something that most fans will welcome with open arms.

Deadline is reporting that David O. Russell, the director behind the Oscar-winning boxing drama, The Fighter, has decided to leave the movie adaptation of the hit video game, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Russell had been attached to direct the movie for a long while, and as mentioned above, many strange twists came of his time with the project. The most notable of which was when his Fighter star Mark Wahlberg revealed that he was going to play Nathan Drake in the movie, which set fans of the game into a enraged frenzy. [...]

‘Cloverfield’ Director Matt Reeves Lines Up ‘Frankenstein’ Prequel

Matt Reeves, the director behind Cloverfield and the recent Let the Right One In remake, Let Me In, has a few new projects lining up for the future. The latest of said projects to be announced is something of a prequel to Mary Shelley's classic horror story, Frankenstein, that will be titled This Dark Endeavor.

It tells the story of Victor Frankenstein and his twin brother, Konrad, who are very close and have been all their lives. When Konrad becomes deathly sick, Victor remembers a library he and his brother once explored—and were forbidden to return to by their father—filled with books of remedies and various alchemical concoctions. Victor returns to the library and discovers the "Elixir of Life," and sets off to seek the help of an alchemist in finding the ingredients necessary to create the elixir and save his brother's life.

The movie is based on the Kenneth Oppel book, This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein, which is set to be released this upcoming August 23. [...]

Interview: Slayer Drummer Dave Lombardo

There are metal bands. There are heavy, thrash metal bands. And then, terrorizing them all from the very depths of Hell, is Slayer.

Drummer Dave Lombardo, who began pounding Slayer's relentless beat into our ears almost 30 years ago, agreed to talk with me. Far from being an Angel Of Death, Lombardo was a calm, interesting, and funny guy, generous with his time. He is a man who adores music and chatted happily about the Big 4, Mike Patton, his new band Philm, and the new Slayer album (sort of).

Geeks of Doom: You've been playing Big Four shows for a while now. How are you finding them?

Dave Lombardo: Exciting! Every time there's more in the pipe for us to play on. I at least am looking forward to hanging out with the other guys and doing these festivals that are amazing. It's bringing the European festival vibe to the States. It just feels a little bit like that to me with the big crowds and stuff. It's a lot of fun, I've been enjoying it very much.

Geeks of Doom: So far do you have a favorite show of the ones you've played?

With the big action of the Thor feature film now in theaters of course it makes sense for Marvel to try and put Thor everywhere. They teamed with Lionsgate to bring us the direct-to-DVD and Blu-ray Thor: Tales of Asgard. The animated film tells the story of a teenaged Thor before the Hammer and before he became a hero, at least in the sense that we know him from modern comics or even from the live-action film. In the story, Thor is protected by his father Odin to the point that he is allowed to win exhibition fights with Asgard's most powerful warriors. When he is called out on his fake wins by Sif, a young woman who is already an amazing warrior, Thor feels the need to prove himself. He decides to hide on a sailing ship with the warriors three to seek out a mystical sword and show Sif and the other inhabitants of Asgard that he truly is a great warrior [...]
