Amy Winehouse was found dead today in her London apartment, her publicist confirmed. The singer was 27.
A statement issued by the Metropolitan Police gave little information about the death, without giving a specific name. The report partly read: "Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased.
On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained."
Just last month the singer canceled her European tour after a disastrous performance in Serbia in which she wandered around stage, scratching her arms and vaguely singing her hit songs. Though there is no official word about her cause of death (an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow), rumor has it that drugs and alcohol were a factor.
Twenty-seven is somewhat of a haunting age. Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and Janis Joplin were all 27 year-old when they died of drug overdoses. So was artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Kurt Cobain was 27 when he committed suicide and English guitarist and Rolling Stone contributor Brian Jones was also 27 when he was found dead in his swimming pool.
A host of celebs tweeted about the sad news once it broke stateside Saturday morning.
A heartbroken Kelly Osbourne wrote: "i cant even breath right my now im crying so hard i just lost 1 of my best friends. i love you forever Amy & will never forget the real you!"
Kim Kardashian tweeted: "I just heard the news that Amy Winehouse passed away. What a true talent. I pray she's in a better place & at peace."
Demi Lovato wrote: "Amy Winehouse.. So sad. Unfortunately the world lost an incredibly talented woman to such a powerful disease... addiction. #RIP"
Nicki Minaj also chimed in: "Please tell me Amy Winehouse didn't die. Is this some sick joke?"
