It’s NAVY vs. Aliens In The First Trailer For Peter Berg’s ‘Battleship’

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 07:21 PM PDT

We've known for a while now that director Peter Berg (The Rundown, The Kingdom) would be taking the unlikeliest of routes when he took the popular board game, Battleship, and turned it into a movie. Instead of just going with a movie about a bunch of ships doing battle in the middle of the ocean, it was decided to add a little spice in the form of an alien invasion.

In the movie, Naval officers based on the USS John Paul Jones (named for the man who's getting his own slightly twisted movie titled Here There Be Monsters) discover a strange craft that turns out to be aliens who are attempting to build a power source from the Earth's oceans.

You can check out the first trailer for Battleship and read a synopsis by continuing on below now.

Personally, I'm not sure what to think. It looked fun at first, but once whatever the hell that giant thing was pounced out of the ocean, it took on a very Transformers vibe. Though there was a nice little tip of the hat to Battleship the game in there. [...]

AMC Promotes Glen Mazzara To Showrunner On ‘The Walking Dead’

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 06:08 PM PDT

Talk about rising to the top quickly. It's being reported that Glen Mazzara, who was hired after season 1 of The Walking Dead as a head writer and the #2 guy to then showrunner Frank Darabont, will now be taking over as showrunner.

The news comes one day after the surprising announcement that Darabont had stepped down from the position, where he acted as an executive producer, writer, and director on the show he helped create and adapt for television from the Robert Kirkman comic book series.

It's still unknown why exactly Darabont stepped down, but it's thought by some that he was not able to adjust from his familiarity with movies to TV formats. Apart from some questionable decisions, there didn't seem to be any indication that anything was wrong, and everyone seemed happy with how things were going. Also still unknown is if and in what capacity Darabont will remain on the show—last we heard, the powers that be were talking with him about how he might be able to continue contributing. [...]

Rockstar Games To Release Free ‘Red Dead Redemption’ DLC As A Thank You To Fans

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 04:26 PM PDT

DLC is, most of the time, an evil thing. Gamemakers like to create tempting new quests and items and various other things, and then force you to pay even more money (on top of the $60 you need to drop in the first place) in order to get these things.

Now, to be fair, so long as the DLC isn't crucial to the main game's storyline, it's not a big deal and we still have the choice whether or not to spend a little extra on a certain game. But when something does feel important (like Mass Effect 2's Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC, perhaps) or when John Cleese is constantly on your ass to buy more crap (yes, we're talking to you, Fable III), a line is crossed.

All of that said, it's surprising that more companies don't win the hearts of gamers everywhere by throwing some free DLC our way from time to time. To get the ball rolling, Rockstar Games will do just that with word that they will be releasing a little free DLC for their hit western title, Red Dead Redemption, come September. [...]

Brian Helgeland To Write ‘Here There Be Monsters’ For Warner Brothers; Robert Zemeckis In Talks To Direct

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 03:02 PM PDT

The Wrap is reporting that Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures have reached a deal with screenwriter Brian Helgeland to pen the script for a movie to be called Here There Be Monsters. The studios have also entered into negotiations with Academy Award–winning director Robert Zemeckis to make the movie for them.

The movie will follow along the same lines as the popular alternate history monster movie sub–sub–genre where real times, places, and historical figures have monsters and all kinds of beasties thrown into the mix.

Here There Be Monsters revolves around real–life Revolutionary War naval hero, John Paul Jones, only in this telling of his story, some big, scary sea monsters will be involved. Why make boring historically accurate Oscar bait movies when you can add freakin' sea monsters? A question worth pondering, indeed.

If Zemeckis does in fact direct the movie, it would be one of a few live–action projects he's been setting up after a string of performance capture animated features including The Polar Express, Beowulf, and A Christmas Carol. [...]

The GoD List: Comics For July 27, 2011

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 10:02 AM PDT

GoD List Banner

Each and every week "The Second City Saint" Henchman21 and "The Murfreesboro Madman" MK2FAC3 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn't? So, let's take a look into the depths of their pull lists, grab some comics, and we'll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of July 27, 2011. Single issues and trades, they're all here.

On last week's The GoD List, the evil Henchman21 messed up his death trap when he mistakenly put boiling hot voile into a pit that was to fill with boiling hot oil, but this week he has developed another dastardly plan to destroy the dynamic MK2FAC3. This week, "Two Ton Twenty-One" tries to abolish "THE FAC3" when he's strapped into an egg chair and is forced to listen to nothing but 70's and 80's prog rock until he sinks into a Floyd Hole. Will "THE FAC3" be able to escape the demented deathtrap of "THE HENCH"? Or will "THE SECOND CITY SAINT" finally be able to exact revenge for "THE WEEK OF TWO FAC3S"?

You can give this edition of The GoD List a CGC rating of 9.6, as long as you promise not to read it [...]
