Blu-ray Review: The Walking Dead Season 1 Posted: 19 Apr 2011 06:00 PM PDT By SoAndyway The Walking Dead, Season One Blu-ray | DVD Based on the Comic Book Series Created by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard Developed for Television by Frank Darabont Starring Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Sarah Wayne Callies, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun Anchor Bay Entertainment Release Date: March 8, 2011 When I first heard about AMC's The Walking Dead, I was very intrigued. Not many networks take chances on comic book properties, let alone one that has nothing to do with tights or flights. I had read a few issues of the comic prior to watching the series and liked them very much, but for the most part I went into the series not really knowing what to expect, and I think that's why I was so taken aback by what I saw. From previews and television spots one could surmise that the show would be a relentless gore fest. While there is plenty of gore, The Walking Dead doesn't rely on that to propel its incredible story. Producer Frank Darabont has an immense passion for this show, one that shines through in each episode on the recently released DVD/Blu-ray sets. [...] |
RIP Sarah Jane: Legendary ‘Doctor Who’ Actress Elisabeth Sladen Has Died Posted: 19 Apr 2011 04:54 PM PDT Although the new Doctor Who season has been highly anticipated, fans of the long running sci-fi show are in mourning today, as the news came out that Elisabeth Sladen, known for her role as Sarah Jane Smith in Classic Doctor Who, died today at the age of 63. Lizo Mzimba from the BBC has reported that Sladen has been dealing with cancer for some time now. Sladen made her debut as Sarah Jane Smith in Doctor Who in 1973, starring alongside Third Doctor Jon Pertwee as his new companion. Her first episode was The Time Warrior, which saw her and the Doctor face off against the evil Sontarans. She continued working with Doctor Who for three years, and stayed on when Tom Baker took over as the Fourth Doctor. [...] |
Book Review: Peter & Max: A Fables Novel Posted: 19 Apr 2011 03:38 PM PDT By Waerloga69 Peter & Max: A Fables Novel Paperback | Kindle By Bill Willingham Illustrated by Steve Leialoha Vertigo Released: October 2009 For those of you that have not read Bill WIllingham's wonderful Fables comics or graphic novels, you do yourself a disservice. But worry not, the new spinoff, Peter & Max: A Fables Novel is a standalone novel. Not that it doesn't tie into the comics by name and locale but it requires no former knowledge of the series or its characters. I find myself in awe of the writing style, so much so that it is inspiring me to add flourish to my own review. As with the entirety of the comic series, this novel is less about the length of the tale (which is quite long) and more about the depth of its telling. And what a tale it is! It delves deeper into the life of a Fable than I have ever before been honored to witness (or in this case, read). [...] |
