DUDE!!

A message in my inbox this morning - NOT my achievement, I hasten to add: (though I wish with all the magic wands in the land that it was)

“I did 3.05 kilometres in 10 minutes yesterday!!!”

It took me a minute to get my head around this – this is like running a 5 minute mile. WHOA. DUDE. (My first PB time for running 1km (in May 2010) was 8.5 minutes and even then I needed a defibrilator)

As I know the owner of this accomplishment - I can attest that she looks of normal athleticism, hasn’t been training that long and is not an obsessively keen runner (I’m still talking her into the 10km LOVErun) so DOUBLE WHOA. DUDE.

So how did she do it? Well a) she got herself a structured training programme courtesy of her Personal Trainer b) she trains in the gym with her sister making the process more enjoyable and c) she just goes for it.

Yesterday’s achievement was the product of speed/ sprint interval training: This is what "3km in 10min DUDE" had to say: “I was out of breath, but I know if I do a power walk for 1 min, then I can sprint run for 2 or 3 mins more. If you run at one pace it becomes difficult to cover a bigger distance. Next time try a 1 min power walk, then a 2-3 mins sprint. Keep alternating and you'll be doing 10k in 40 mins :D”

A 40 min 10km - THIS I have to try – my only problem is that out of the gym setting and away from the handy timer on the treadmill – it’s tricky to time intervals well, not to mention, maintain the correct pace for the duration of the interval. What might start off as a sprint run quickly disintegrates into a crawl, all the while I’m under the impression that I’m sprinting as there’s no treadmill to fall off when I don’t keep the pace up.

If anyone has any ideas or recommendations for a good interval training music track or programme that's perfect for training outdoors and is simple enough for an relative IT ignoramous – please get in touch ASAP.

The opportunity to cut 20+mins of torture from my 10km run every day in Feb is just too great to miss. xx

p.s. DUDE - despite my promise, I'm not sure we should train together - I have my remaining scrap of dignity to maintain ;-))
